[Facebook too] Autoplay Instagram stories with audio in silent mode

New updates are added at the bottom of this story…….

The original story (published September 8, 2022) follows:

Instagram is one of the most used social platforms in the world. The service started out as a photo-focused app, but now also offers short videos.

Instagram not only allows you to upload your favorite photos and short videos, but also allows you to start live broadcasts.

Images and videos can be uploaded to two Instagram sections: Live Stream and Stories. The difference between the two sections is that Instagram stories are automatically deleted after 24 hours.

That said, currently many users are getting frustrated due to a change in the behavior of Instagram stories where they automatically play with audio even with the phone on silent.

Autoplay Instagram stories with audio in silent mode after latest update

Normally, Instagram stories with audio included would play with the sound turned off if the user’s device was set to “silent mode”.

But the behavior of Instagram Stories has changed after a recent update. Now stories play automatically with audio even with the phone on “silent mode” and users cannot mute them.

Autoplay IG story audio

Can anyone tell me how to stop audio from autoplaying when opening people’s stories?

I just noticed it today. I usually check Instagram stories when I’m taking a bus or waiting in line at the store, now it’s impossible to do that without first manually reducing the sound level of the phone before opening Instagram and then put back in place because of the audio.

The change frustrates many users who have been used to the traditional behavior for years. Auto-enable audio in Instagram Stories is a nuisance for many.

One Redditor suggested that Instagram would like to make Stories more similar to Reels as a potential cause for the change:

The update also brought an annoying bug

According to reports, the new update also brings a bug that further aggravates the situation.

It looks like Instagram Stories audio is forcing priority over audio from other apps. In other words, the sound overlaps that of other music apps or podcasts.

This now seems unrelated to whether the audio is on or off for the reels, so I’m stuck with the story audio at the same time as my music or podcasts in the background 😒

The audio even continues to play when you exit the Instagram app. The only way to fix this problem is to force close the app.

Yes, it’s been happening to me all day. Even worse, the story sound continues after I close my screen. I have to force close Instagram to make it stop.

No official recognition, potential workaround

There is still no official acknowledgment of the issue from the Instagram team. But, there is a potential workaround you can try (access the link from here):

Update 1 (09 September 2022)

10:48 a.m. (IST): An editor in chief underline that they also face the same problem with Facebook stories. This suggests that Meta may have made changes to these social media apps.

However, there is no official acknowledgment from Meta on the same yet.
